During the devastating fires on August 8th, 2023, almost all of Lahaina's historic properties were destroyed.
Hurricane Dora, a category 4 storm, generated high winds on the Hawaiian Islands and fuelled at least three fires on Maui.

The wildfires on the island of Maui, resulted in the loss of over 100 people, especially in the region of Lahaina, rendering it among the deadliest wildfires in Hawaiian history. The impact of the wildfires on those residing on the island included a loss of housing and employment in the context of financial difficulties; exacerbated mental health symptoms and associated risk; and permanent loss of important cultural sites

Lahaina has over a thousand years of rich history and was the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii from 1820 to 1845. Numerous members of Prince Darrick’s ohana (family) settled in this area and were interred there.
In fact, HRH Prince Darrick’s forefather, H.E. Col. Robert Hoapili Baker, was the former Royal Governor of Maui.
Hence, the work of the Lahaina Restoration Foundation is very close to Prince Darrick’s heart. His Highness appeals to you all for your support either direct to the Lahaina Restoration Foundation or via the Kamakahelei Foundation.
