HRH Prince Darrick & HRH Princess Anna were invited to attend the Gettysburg Remembrance Day Parade and Ceremonies for 2021.

Their Highnesses were there to honour the 100 Hawaiians that served on both sides of the conflict during the American Civil War. (12 Apr 1861 – 9 Apr 1865)

Their Royal highnesses were taken on a very comprehensive and most humbling tour of the various memorials of the Antietam National Battlefield, Maryland and the Gettysburg Battlefield, Pennsylvania. They paid tribute to the fallen and presented Hawaiian flags at each memorial.

100 Hawaiians served in the American Civil War

When the American Civil War broke out in 1861 many of Hawaii’s citizens became passionate about serving in the US conflict. Officially, the Kingdom of Hawai'i remained neutral during the war. Yet given the strong support in Hawaii for ending slavery in America, perhaps it should not be surprising that more than 100 Hawaiians fought in the American Civil War. But for well over a century, their contributions had been erased, forgotten or lost.
